The Yazidi House in Hasakah Governorate, northeast Syria, announced on Saturday reuniting a woman who was kidnapped by the Islamic State (ISIS) with her family in Sinjar (Shengal) in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq (KRI).

The Yazidi House stated on its Facebook page that they handed over Khurto to the Shengal Council in the presence of one of her relatives and the Sinjar Resistance Units, Yazidi militia formed in Iraq in 2007 to protect Yazidis in Iraq in the wake of ISIS attacks.

The Yezidi House, a civil non-governmental organization, works to return the freed prisoners and kidnapped people in Syria to their families in coordination with the official authorities of the Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria (AANES).

In late 2023, the Internal Security Forces of North and East Syria (Asayish) and the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) launched a security operation in Hawl Camp, northeast Syria, to pursue cells of ISIS. On Feb. 4, the Women’s Protection Units (YPJ) announced the rescue of Kovan Aydo Khurto, 24.

Khurto was kidnapped ten years ago from the village of Hardan in Sinjar with her father, mother, and four sisters when ISIS attacked the area, resulting in the abduction and killing of thousands of Yazidis. The UN referred to this attack as genocide.
