Iraqi Kurdistan Prime Minister Masrour Barzani has emphasised the importance of ongoing international efforts to bring ISIL terrorists to justice. The Prime Minister made the statement during a meeting with Christian Ritcher, Special Adviser to the UN Secretary General and head of the UN Investigation Team (UNITAD) on accountability for crimes committed by ISIS terrorists.

According to a statement from the "Kurdistan Regional Government" (KRG), during the meeting the two sides "discussed protecting the rights of victims, providing them with reparations and continuing international support for the prosecution of ISIS members. The parties agreed that terrorists must be held accountable for their crimes, including Yazidi genocide, war crimes and crimes against humanity."

Special Adviser Ritcher thanked the KRG for partnering with UNITAD in collecting, preserving and digitising evidence of ISIL atrocities against the Yazidi minority, as well as bringing legal action against the perpetrators.

Prime Minister Barzani reaffirmed Kurdistan's commitment to work with the international community to ensure justice for the victims of ISIS. He also expressed his absolute support for continued efforts and co-operation with the international community to bring terrorists to justice.

Recall that in the summer of 2014, the "Islamic State" (ISIS) took control of almost a third of Iraq by mass ethnic cleansing of the Yazidi national minority. At the end of 2017, Baghdad declared its "final victory" over the terrorist group. Despite this, ISIL sleeper cells remain in Iraq, especially in disputed territories, continuing to attack armed forces and civilians, and in particular the Yazidi minority living in Iraqi territory.
