Members of the Iraqi government honored the Yazidi victims of the 2014 genocide perpetrated by the ISIS terrorist group. The Federal Government of Iraq expressed its sincere condolences to the families of the hundreds of victims killed in these acts of violence, those of the thousands of Yazidis enslaved by ISIS and those still missing.

The Sinjar district, populated mainly by Yazidis in the Iraqi province of Nineveh, came under the control of ISIS in August 2014. The terrorist group has committed numerous acts of genocide in this region, killing and abducting thousands of civilians, including women and children. Hundreds of thousands were forced to flee, leaving their homes.

According to the Kurdistan government, 3,570 Yazidi women and children have been rescued from ISIS captivity. 2,600 Yazidis are still missing.

Yazidi refugees still remain in camps for temporarily displaced persons in Kurdistan, unable to return to Sinjar, destroyed by war and overrun by armed groups that do not obey the authorities.
