Last week, the Iraqi Government decided to transfer ownership of land and residential buildings built within the boundaries of Sinjar district after 1975. The solution will include at least 13 residential complexes and neighborhoods, including the Sununi and Al-Qahtaniyah neighborhoods, which are the two largest neighborhoods in Sinjar.

This decision of the government naturally pleased Yazidi population, who have been living in tent camps for 9 years. The move is expected to encourage displaced Yazidis to leave the camps and return to their homes.

Displaced Yazidis living in the camps are very hopeful that the Government will fulfill its promise. It is expected that after the land and houses are transferred to their owners, their prices will rise, and, most importantly, they will be able to benefit from real estate, which has not been possible for Yazidis until now, for example, Ibrahim Khader, a Yazidi from the Al-Qahtaniyah district, bought a mud-brick house in 2007 in the area of Al-Qahtaniyah (Tal Uzair), and then rebuilt it with cement at his own expense, but for years he waited for a decision to become its owner, because it was impossible to legalize and register the house for himself.

The representative of the Kurdistan Democratic Party in the Iraqi parliament, Majid Shankali, pointed out that attempts to seize the lands and houses of Yazidi population have been underway for more than 10 years, but there have always been obstacles to making a decision and its implementation.
