International Agence France-Presse reports confirmed that Iraq is experiencing its worst drought season in 92 years and that Yazidi farmers have nowhere to graze their livestock, with decreasing rainfall and water levels in rivers, local Yazidi media Dengê Êzdiya reports.

Many farmers have had to apply to local authorities for permission to dig wells that would allow them to irrigate their crops and water their livestock. The Ministry of Water Resources announced a plan to use groundwater in six districts (governorates) for agricultural purposes.

According to the United Nations, Iraq is one of the 5 countries most affected by climate change as it faces significant temperature increases and water shortages.

A report by the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA) indicates that although Iraq has passed laws regulating the drilling of new wells for agricultural purposes, the country does not use a tariff system to limit groundwater use.

The report states that there are no initiatives to encourage the use of modern irrigation methods. Most farmers resort to traditional irrigation methods, completely flooding their land with water, which wastes water at a time when the country needs to rationalize its consumption.
