According to the Shingal 1 agency, the total number of all Yezidi fighters in the Shangal region reaches 17 thousand people.
This number includes fighters of all Yezidi detachments operating in the region:
- Ezidhan's Defense Forces (Hêza parastina Özîdxan, HPÊ).
- Shangala Self-Defense Forces (Yekîneyên Berxwedana Şingal, YBŞ).
- Detachments of Hashd al-Shaabi (Lalesh detachment, Kocho, 4 regiment and 79 regiment).
- The forces of Ezidhan women (Yekîneyên Jinên Özidxan — YJÊ).
- Asaish Ezidhan (special purpose group).
- Yezidi Peshmerga regiments.
- Independent national militia units.
- Yezidis in the Iraqi Armed Forces and border guards.
According to the statistics provided, the number of fighters currently available is enough to counter the new terrorist threat, this is especially important against the background of news about the new activity of ISIS in Syria. But, unfortunately, fragmentation in the Yezidi society does not allow joining forces and creating a full-fledged army. At the moment, the Yezidi militia is poorly organized, has a low level of training, a small budget, poor equipment and insufficient amount of weapons and ammunition, and some detachments even compete with each other and adhere to different parties.
The Yezidis could become a significant force in Iraq by joining forces, creating a single administration, exchanging experience, but unfortunately, we are far from that yet. We can only hope that the command of these detachments will soon be able to find a compromise.
