The Iraqi National Exhumations of Yazidi Mass Graves (MGD) team, in cooperation with the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR), the International Center for Missing Persons (ICMP), and the Center for Genocide Research (CIGE), conducted exhumations of 12 Yazidi mass graves in the Jidala-Tel Azer area, as well as in the villages of Siba Sheikh Kheder and Tel Banat from October 15 to 28, 2023.

These exhumations are part of the ongoing efforts to document and investigate the Yazidi genocide committed by ISIS in 2014. These exhumations have uncovered the remains of more than 150 people, most of whom were male.

In Tel Azer, the exhumations were carried out at the Mahmoud Khro farm, which was seized by ISIS in August 2014. Witnesses said ISIS executed members of Khro's family here, as well as other men, women and children who tried to flee or resist.

In Siba Sheikh Kheder, exhumations were carried out in the village, which was one of the first to be attacked by ISIS in 2014. Witnesses said ISIS executed men here who tried to flee or resist, as well as women and children.

The exhumations confirm that ISIS committed genocide against Yazidis in 2014. These crimes were widespread, systematic and aimed at destroying the Yazidi people.

In addition to the exhumations, MGD also conducted forensic examination of the remains, collection of DNA samples and their storage. This information will be used to identify the victims and determine the cause of death.

MGD also provided support to the victims' families, including emotional support, legal assistance, and help in locating missing relatives.

Key findings from these exhumations:

- ISIS committed genocide against Yazidis in 2014.
- The attacks killed thousands of Yazidis, including men, women and children.
- Thousands of Yazidis were kidnapped and enslaved.
- ISIS has mutilated and tortured Yazidis.
- These findings are supported by previous investigations, including the report of the International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia (ICTY), which in 2017 found ISIS guilty of genocide of Yazidis.

MGD plans to continue exhumations of Yazidi mass graves in Iraq and Syria.
