Two ancient peoples, the Yezidis and the Assyrians, are on the verge of destruction – will Biden help them?

To save Iraq from the fate of Afghanistan-the leaders of local Christian communities and the Yezidi population of Shangal appealed to President Biden with this appeal, arguing that national and religious minorities living in Iraq, such as Assyrians and Yezidis, are threatened with genocide.
According to the Jerusalem Post, two Christian leaders, Pastor Johnny Moore and Juliana Timurazi, called a press conference last week under the auspices of the Simon Wiesenthal Center, with the participation of the regional director of the Yazda organization, they read an open letter to the President of the United States, urging him not to repeat the mistake that caused a humanitarian catastrophe in Afghanistan.
The document, in particular, says that the complete withdrawal of American troops from Iraq is unacceptable. In their opinion, " without the presence of the United States, the history of the Assyrians and Yazidis in their ancient lands will end."
For the Assyrian Christians and Yezidis, exhausted and exhausted by war and chaos, two national minorities who have been living on the plains of Nineveh since ancient times, living peacefully side by side for centuries, the complete withdrawal of US troops can mean the death of two peoples.
The appeal states that in 2003, during the American invasion of Iraq, there were 1.5 million Assyrian Christians here, who are one of the oldest Christian communities in the world. Today, only 150 thousand Assyrian Christians remain here. The number of Yazidis has decreased from 600 thousand to 400 thousand people.
The greatest catastrophe for both peoples was the arrival of ISIS, one of the most violent terrorist groups in the world. The "Islamic State" has filled the void created after the end of the war in Iraq, where murders, robberies and rapes began.
This vacuum was formed when in 2011 President Barack Obama decided to withdraw 45,000 US army soldiers from Iraq.
The authors of the appeal recall that on November 29 of the same year, then Vice President Joe Biden said during an official visit to Iraq: "We are starting new ones... comprehensive relations between the United States and Iraq as sovereign partners." Biden made the announcement after meeting with then-Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki and other Iraqi officials.
However, the IG did not pay any attention to this memorandum, and the resulting vacuum allowed the terrorist organization to rob, kill and rape throughout Iraq. The world's media were filled with reports of extremist crimes killing thousands of Iraqi civilians who profess a variety of religions, as well as the destruction of monasteries, mosques, tombs, shrines and churches in Iraq and Syria.
The war against IS also brought new suffering to both Assyrians and Yazidis, although, in the end, the United States, which returned its troops to Iraq to suppress IS, brought a semblance of stability.
The authors of the appeal warn that if President Biden withdraws the remaining US forces from Iraq "forever", then both historical peoples who inhabited the cultural ancestral homeland of modern civilization will disappear forever.
They can only pray that President Biden and his military and foreign policy advisers will reconsider this decision after the catastrophe that Afghans of all faiths, other than the radical version of Taliban Islam, are now facing.
The counter-offensive of Islam has recently become more and more powerful. If Iraq is also abandoned after the victory of the Turkish-Azerbaijani alliance in Nagorno-Karabakh and the new capture of Afghanistan by the Taliban, it is unlikely that this will benefit the Greater Middle East.
The balance of power will definitely shift in favor of the Islamists, and this means, among other things, that the keys to the Nineveh plains will undoubtedly be transferred to Iran, which will receive the long – awaited strategic prize-unlimited access to the Mediterranean Sea. All this will actually lead to the emergence of a new powerful front that threatens the existence of the Jewish people as well.
So the "lamentation on the rivers of Babylon" will certainly echo in the mountains of Jerusalem.
