Following the genocide of Yazidis by ISIS a decade ago, the Yazidi community continues to struggle for justice and reconstruction. Two conferences held in Amsterdam and Brussels brought together Yazidi communities from around the world to discuss ways to achieve these goals.

The first conference, "Yazidi Survivors", was organised by the "Yazidi Legal Network" at the University of Amsterdam. Its aim was to help Yazidis seek recognition and accountability for crimes committed by ISIS terrorists. A second conference in Brussels, organised by the Yazidi Women's Councils and the Union of Yazidi Associations, also discussed justice and reconstruction.

The Brussels conference was co-organised by Feleknas Uka, a respected member of the Yazidi community in Germany and former member of the European Parliament. Both conferences emphasised the complexity of the judicial and political aspects of the post-genocide Yazidi problem.

However, despite the challenges, genocide survivors and experts continue their work, a joint investigation team has been established with Sweden, Belgium and France, in which UNITAD (UN Investigation Team to Advance Accountability for Crimes Committed by ISIL) also participates. This co-operation allows for the exchange of information and strengthens efforts to bring perpetrators to justice.

At a conference at the European Parliament in Brussels, lawyer Rojda Arslan emphasised the diversity of nationalities of the perpetrators and the location of the crimes. This creates difficulties in determining which country and which laws should apply in specific cases. However, countries that have recognised the Yazidi genocide have a responsibility to hold those responsible to account.

Despite the challenges, the combined efforts of human rights professionals and organisations offer hope for progress in bringing perpetrators to justice and achieving justice for the Yazidi people.
