Over the past week, more than 20 Yazidi families have returned to Shangal. They are mostly residents of the Northern part of the region. This was reported by Yazidi human rights activist Murad Ismail.

"Yazidi families continue to return to Shangal. 21 more families returned today. Lack of local authority and security remain the biggest challenges. The economy is also in a terrible state, " Murad Ismail said on his Twitter account.

As a result of the 2014 genocide, more than 400,000 Yazidis left Shangal and became refugees. Most of them settled in refugee camps in Northern Iraq, while some went to neighboring Syria and Turkey. So far, most of the Yazidi refugees have not returned to their homes.

One of the main factors holding people back from returning to Shangal, according to the IOM, is the lack of necessary infrastructure: water, electricity and lack of necessary medical support, as well as poor security measures.
