Nineveh, the place of residence of the Yazidi population, has turned into a new regional and international conflict point in the region, rather, into a major "node" in the "Project of the Century" sponsored by China against the background of American opposition, a "node" that represents the Silk Road. This province is religiously and ethnically diverse and still suffers from the consequences of ISIS control, are in the center of the world's attention, especially given that active countries have "shared" influence in it through strategic agreements that are far from the approval of the Iraqi government and do not consider the interests of the Yazidi people.
Strategic expert Khaled Al-Maeini in one of his interviews said: "There are enough problems in Nineveh, one of them is Mount Sinjar, inhabited by most Yazidis. Because of it, there is a local, regional and international conflict for control over it, between Arab and Kurdish clans, since it divides the two main components in the region. The country, on the other hand, is a connecting node on the Silk Road or the Chinese Century project, which is led by China and its allies in the region, such as Iran, this path should pass through Sinjar until it reaches Syria, and from there to the Mediterranean Sea, in light of strong American opposition.
It is noteworthy that the Iranian Ambassador to Iraq, Iraj Masjedi, announced in a TV interview about his country's desire to open a consulate in the city of Mosul, the center of the Nineveh region, and confirmed that all efforts for this are being made in full swing. And all this after French President Emmanuel Macron, during his visit to Mosul at the end of last month, announced France's intention to open a consulate in Mosul as well.
This regional conflict affected the local side, so the Iraqi armed groups associated with Iran collaborated with the Kurdistan Workers ' Party (PKK) to control Sinjar and implement the Silk Road project on the one hand, and to ensure the continuity of the Kurdish structure that plans to create a Greater Kurdistan under the auspices of America on the other hand.
As for France, with the green light from America, it is trying to fill the void created by the withdrawal of American troops and its interest in Mosul by opening a consulate and creating military bases, because the city is in a strategically important place.
Political analyst Shaho al-Qara Dagi recently stated that "the city of Mosul has a geopolitical, strategic and economic geographical position, and the recent conflicts over this city embody its importance, despite the fact that internal conflicts of militias and armed groups with the aim of seizing control of the city". Iran looks at Mosul in a special way, because it considers it part of the corridor connecting Iran to the Mediterranean Sea through Syria, and it is working on a serious desire to expand its influence, while Turkey is watching this closely.
The visit of French President Emmanuel Macron and his promises show that there is regional and international competition in Mosul, but the question is whether this competition will lead to greater stability and security or lead to new conflicts. The weakness of the Iraqi state allowed external parties to interfere, compete and conflict over the Iraqi region, and it is very unfortunate that this happened, because all these facts will negatively affect the security of the city and its economy," the expert Khaled Al-Mayini concluded.
On October 9, 2020, Baghdad and Erbil signed an agreement called "historic", providing for the maintenance of security in the Sinjar region, where the Yazidi population originally lives, by federal security forces in coordination with the Peshmerga forces associated with the Kurdistan region, the expulsion of all armed factions and the termination of the PKK presence.
