Fifty-year-old Marwan Alloubi, who has been serving Yazidi religious shrines in the Bashiqa area since childhood, Marwan stands on a hill overlooking the shrine of Sheikhubakar and remembers with pain and sadness what this place was like before it was bombed by ISIS.

Temple Sahebkar is the largest Yezidi sanctuary in the region from the point of view of Holiness for the Yezidi people. It was blown up in the summer of 2014, when the territory passed to the ISIL terrorists.

Engineer Khairi Kiddi, who is responsible for the volunteer campaign to restore Yazidi shrines, says: "According to accurate statistics, 24 shrines were blown up, and the number of holy springs that were blown up and restored by us in 2017 reaches 20. All the work was done by volunteers, we received financial donations from the Yazidis of Iraq and beyond, which contributed to the completion of the construction of all the shrines, which cost 35 million Iraqi dinars".

According to the statistics of the Yazidi human rights organization, the militants of the extremist group destroyed 68 Yazidi shrines and temples in order to erase the Yazidi millennial identity. We are talking about such shrines as the Sheikh Hassan Temple, the Nassardin Temple, the Sheikh Shams Temple, the Al-Said Temple, the Sheikh Manda Temple and the Sheikh Babak shrine in Sinjar, the Amadin shrine, as well as the Berri Ur Shrine and the Mameh Shwan shrine.

The Yazidi organization contributed to the collection and paperwork for the reconstruction of a number of shrines in Sinjar after the end of hostilities across Iraq in December 2017.

The religious shrines of the Yazidis have a status and religious historical significance not only for the Yazidis, but also for the historical heritage of Iraq.

Despite the pain inflicted by the brutal terrorist group ISIS, Yazidi shrines have reopened.

This work is part of the "Media Education" project implemented by (MICT) Germany in 2021.
