The Preparatory Commission for the 10th anniversary of the Yazidi genocide issued a statement calling on all government agencies, diplomatic and international missions, media and civil society organisations in Iraq:

While we are approaching the National Day of the Yazidi Genocide that has been approved by the Iraqi Parliament, which falls on the 3rd of August, when the so-called Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIS) committed genocide crimes, we are convinced that this anniversary is supposed to be a unique one. Although ten years have passed since those catastrophic events, everyone acknowledges the bitter reality. The genocide is still ongoing. The suffering, vulnerability and challenges, that our people faced by, are developing in a dramatic way and the obstacles are getting harder. It does not matter, where our people are; in IDP Camps, Sinjar, or as refugees in any place worldwide, the plight is still the same.

In light of this, the Yazidi community –that is representing victims and their families, NGOs and Civil Society; cultural, religious, political, tribal, and social institutions – has made a common decision collectively:

We, all, are going to commemorate on August 3rd, 2024, in a unified manner, in one place at the Yazidi Genocide Memorial site in Sinjar. Because the Yazidis aim to convey a clear and unified message to Iraq and the international community.

Therefore, we call upon governmental, international, and local entities to join us in honoring the victims and listening to the Yazidi community’s unified voice from the place where the genocide was committed. Furthermore, we have decided not to organize any other ceremony or activity on the same day within Iraq, to give this commemoration the rightful expression of the Yazidi community in all its facets.
