The Shangal Autonomous Administration issued a statement regarding the ongoing discussions about the Yazidi community and the recent arrests of Yazidi and Arab citizens from Shangal.

Reading out the press release, Autonomous Assembly member Hwededa Berekat noted that Iraq is made up of many religious communities, nations and ethnic groups.

"We, as the Yazidi people, have lived on this land for thousands of years with our own faith and culture. The Yazidi people are a great asset to Iraq. Based on our faith, we have taken as a basis to live in peace and tranquility with neighboring nations. The peace of Iraq is also the peace of Shangal.

The Iraqi Constitution gives us the right to govern and defend ourselves independently. To that end, an Autonomous Administration has been established in Shangal, together with the peoples living there. That administration operates in coordination with State institutions. The state institutions also see the Autonomous Administration of Shangal as an opportunity for co-operative life and democracy in Iraq."

Stressing that the recognition of the Yazidi people comes through the recognition of the Autonomous Administration of Shangal, Berekat said: "First of all, the genocide committed against the Yazidi people must be recognised. If these steps are not taken, not a single word about the Yazidi people will be valid and true."

Hwededa Berekat reacted to the recent arrests of Yazidi and Arab citizens in Shangal, adding, "Those who want to disturb the peace and tranquility of the people of Shangal are using dirty methods. We appeal to the authorities. These detentions do not serve unity and democracy in Iraq. On the contrary, they cause great harm. For this reason, the detained citizens of Shangal must be released."

Also speaking on behalf of the Yazidi Council of Shangal, Dehil Murat called on Iraq to recognise the genocide committed against the Yazidi community in 2014.
