Yazidi genocide in Iraq began on August 3, 2014, when ISIS terrorist gangs attacked the Sinjar region, home to a large Yazidi population. ISIS forces systematically killed Yazidi men, thousands of women and children were enslaved, Yazidi religious sites and cultural heritage were also destroyed, the destruction of Yazidi temples and shrines was a deliberate attempt to erase Yazidi identity.

The United Nations has labeled the attack on Yazidis as genocide, and the International Criminal Court (ICC) is investigating the crimes committed by ISIS. However, the genocide continues and thousands of Yazidis continue to be displaced.

The Sinjar district attack was part of a wider ISIS campaign to seize territory in Iraq and Syria. ISIS forces quickly crushed Yazidi defenders and many Yazidis were killed or captured. Those captured were subjected to horrific abuse, including rape, torture and forced marriages.

The United Nations has called the attack on Yazidis genocide. The ICC is also investigating crimes committed by ISIS. However, the genocide continues and thousands of Yazidis are still displaced from their homes.

Yazidi genocide is a crime against humanity, a reminder of the dangers of intolerance and extremism. It is also a reminder of the importance of protecting national and religious minorities.

The international community must do more to help Yazidis, they must provide humanitarian assistance to displaced Yazidis and help bring the perpetrators of genocide to justice.

Today, August 3, 2023, 9 years after the genocide against Yazidi people, Yazidis of Germany, France, USA, Russia, Armenia and Georgia will hold mourning events and rallies to honor the memory of our brothers and sisters.

Cultural Center of the Caucasus Yazidis expresses condolences to the families of the victims and the missing Yazidis.
