Yazidi population is concerned about the decision to terminate the UNITAD mission in Iraq before all investigations into the ISIS terrorist organization are completed. Yazidi population and activists fear that the Iraqi government will not be able or willing to prosecute ISIS members for their crimes against Yazidis.

Yazidis are a religious minority that was subjected to genocide by ISIS in 2014. Thousands of Yazidis were killed and tens of thousands more were enslaved. The United Nations has called the genocide of Yazidis by ISIS terrorists "one of the most terrible crimes against humanity in recent history."

The UNITAD mission was established in 2017 to collect evidence of ISIS crimes, including genocide, crimes against humanity and war crimes. UNITAD worked closely with the Government of Iraq, but was independent and impartial.

The Government of Iraq has requested the termination of the UNITAD mission in September 2024. The UN Security Council approved the request, but also called on the UN Secretary-General to submit a report next January containing his own recommendations on how justice was done against ISIS.

Yazidi population is concerned that the Iraqi Government will not be able or willing to hold ISIS members accountable for their crimes against Yazidis. They point to the fact that the Iraqi Government has refused to establish joint courts with the international community and has reluctantly adopted laws criminalizing genocide and other crimes against humanity.

Yazidis are also concerned about the political instability in Iraq and the fact that there is a risk of a resurgence of ISIS. They fear that if the UNITAD mission is terminated before all ISIS investigations are completed, it will be difficult or impossible to bring ISIS members to justice in the future.

Yazidi population calls on the UN Security Council to reconsider its decision to terminate the UNITAD mission in September 2024. They also call on the international community to put pressure on the Iraqi Government to ensure that justice is restored for the victims of ISIS crimes.
