The German Parliament now classifies thousands of killings of the Yazidi population in Iraq as genocide.

On Thursday, July 7, the Bundestag pledged to classify the crimes committed against the Yazidis in Iraq in 2014 by ISIS terrorists as a crime against humanity - genocide, the parliament confirmed the decision by voting in the Petitions Committee and called on the Bundestag Petition Commission to recognize these actions as genocide.

As for the members of the Green Party, Pete Walter Rosenheimer and Max Lux welcomed this decision and stated that in August 2014 the Yezidis were subjected to ethnic cleansing (genocide) and endured unbearable suffering.

"More than 5,000 people were brutally killed in the Sinjar region in northern Iraq. Yazidi women and girls were abducted, raped and sold into slavery, the fate of many abducted is not known to this day," Rosenheimer said on Thursday in Berlin.

Max Lux stressed that the recognition of the genocide is an important part of the treatment of the trauma of the Yezidi community. However, he also noted that the Yazidi religion in northern Iraq continues to suffer from isolation and confirmed that their main goal is to give the Yazidis a chance to start living in security and peace.

Back in June last year, several experts spoke at a hearing in the Bundestag Committee on Human Rights for qualifying the recognition of crimes against Yezidis as genocide and requested a similar statement from the federal government.

The Yazidi minority is constantly being harassed in the Middle East.
