Despite the recent agreement between the Federal government of Iraq and the Autonomous Kurdistan region to withdraw all armed militias from the Sinjar (Shangal) area, Kurdistan Workers ' party (PKK) fighters are still present but now wear the uniform of the Iraqi security forces, an official from the Regional Peshmerga Ministry said on Saturday.

In 2014, during the ISIS attack on the Yazidi cities of Shangal, Sinjar, Nineveh valley and nearby villages, self-defense units were created from local militias. They fought valiantly against terrorist groups and suffered heavy losses.

Erbil and Baghdad agreed in October to restore stability in Shangal as part of an agreement aimed at eliminating PKK-linked militias and the largely Iranian-backed Popular mobilization forces (PMF).

Deputy Peshmerga Minister-Serbast Lazgin told Kurdistan 24 television that the continued presence of PKK fighters in Shangal has worsened the security situation in the city, stressing: "the PKK is still in Shangal."

Lazgin noted that some groups coordinate with the PKK to the point that they sometimes change their uniforms and wear the uniforms of Iraqi armed groups, adding that these groups receive salaries from the Iraqi government, especially those associated with Hashd al-Shaabi.

According to the agreement, local self-defense units formed from local Yazidi residents and state armed forces were to exercise control over security in the region.
