Nadia Murad spoke at a meeting at the United Nations on Monday. The topic of the meeting was "Lockdown and its consequences in the fight against sexual violence and human trafficking during the COVID-19 pandemic". This meeting was organized by Nadia's initiative, a non-profit organization founded by Nadia Murad herself in 2018 as everyone knows, the Yazidi activist protects victims of sexual violence and seeks to restore the Yazidi community in crisis.

In her speech, Nobel peace prize winner Nadia Murad said that with the coronavirus pandemic, trafficking in women and gender-based violence has only increased, which threatens the health and safety of Yazidi women in Iraq and the world."

The 27-year-old activist said curfews, lockdowns and travel restrictions imposed by governments to slow the spread of the virus played into the hands of those who trafficked women.

"Instead of reducing human trafficking and violence, the pandemic has increased the risk of exploitation and abuse of women around the world, including Yazidi girls in Iraq. Few organizations whose goal was to help women fail to do so due to restrictions during the pandemic, and as a result, women's health and safety are at stake. Currently, it is difficult for many women to get access to psychological support and medical care," said Nadia Murad.

Nadia Murad, UNODC goodwill Ambassador for victims of violence and trafficking, noted that Monday is international women's rights Day and expressed the hope that the urgent need to combat gender-based violence and trafficking will be reinforced.
