Thirty-one MEPs applied to Josep Borrell, High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, with a letter urging him to suspend EU candidate country status to Georgia and review EU financing.

“MEPs call the behavior of the Georgian authorities and the leading party Georgian Dream as contrary to the obligations of an EU candidate country. Therefore MEPs request suspension of Georgia’s candidate status without any further progress in the accession process,” reads the letter.

The MEPs then call on the High Representative to “take a firm stance” and to take measures “which would send a clear signal to the Georgian authorities.”

The MEPs stress: “In recent years we have worked tirelessly to support the Georgian people and their aspirations to join the EU.” They say they remain determined to do so, “but the democratic criteria for all EU candidate countries are the same and must be respected.”
