About Shrine of Şerfedîn

The sanctuary of Şerfedîn, on the northern side of Mount Sinjar, is the principal shrine of the Sinjar region and is often described as second in importance only to Lalish for the community there. It is dedicated to the holy figure Şerfedîn, whose name also serves in tradition as a name for the religion itself.

The shrine and its surroundings saw fighting during the 2014–2015 conflict, and its defence carried strong symbolic weight for the community. It remains a focus of devotion and of reconstruction efforts.

Shrines and mazars mark the presence of a holy being or lineage. Many were damaged in recent conflict; where reconstruction is under way this is noted rather than assumed complete.
