Overview

About Aragatsotn Yazidi villages

On the plains and lower slopes around Mount Aragats lies a cluster of Yazidi villages that has long formed the demographic core of the community in Armenia. Yazidis settled here in numbers from the nineteenth century onward, many fleeing persecution further south.

These villages have sustained a distinct Caucasus Yazidi tradition, with its own institutions, publications, and, in recent decades, an active debate over language and identity.

This is a community place rather than a primarily religious one. Population and return figures move and are always given with a source and a date rather than stated as fixed.
