The Sinjar Survivors' Monument a symbol of hope and justice in the context of the Yazidi genocide
On 26 February 2024, the Monument to the Survivors of the Yazidi Genocide was inaugurated in Sinjar (Roj Alat), thanks to the initiative of Nadia Murad. The symbol was a powerful testament to honouring the role of survivors in the context of the Yazidi genocide, as well as their unrelenting struggle for justice.
The depicted Sun on the top of the monument, a symbol of faith and salvation, which is a powerful reminder of a bright future even in the darkest of times. The people depicted in the corner with children in their arms epitomise fortitude and endurance in captivity, but above them the sun always shines, giving hope for liberation and rebirth.
The construction of the monument was part of a temporary reparations project to support survivors, funded by the Global Fund for Women Survivors. This fund was established by Nadia Murad and Dr Makueki after her Nobel Peace Prize and aims to help victims of conflict, including women and children.
Salah Hassan, spokesperson for the "Nadia Initiative", emphasised the importance of the project, which covers various aspects of support for survivors. The program includes financial assistance, housing repair, furniture, agricultural projects, as well as educational and legal support, and medical and psychological support.
This monument has become not only a symbol of remembrance of Yazidi suffering, but also a sign of hope for a future where justice and support for survivors become the norm rather than the exception.
