The U.S. Consulate General in Erbil issued a statement on the situation in Shangal, expressing concern about signs of low progress in the education sector in places where the Yazidi population lives.

"Sinjar's education sector has been severely affected by the conflict and is recovering slowly. Educational institutions, or rather their classrooms, remain overcrowded and often they lack basic furniture", the statement published by the American Consulate General says.

Highlighting the importance of education, the consulate emphasized, "Improving education is a top priority among the Yazidi community of Sinjar".

The diplomatic mission added that "USAID recently partnered with the Step Foundation for Development and Education to renovate 2,000 school classrooms in Sinjar.

In October 2020, Erbil and Baghdad, under the auspices of the UN envoy to Iraq, signed an agreement to normalize the situation in Shangal, the most important points of which were the withdrawal of all illegal armed groups from the city, the appointment of a new mayor, as well as the reconstruction of houses and the settlement of displaced Yazidi families.

However, after more than two years, groups of armed groups are also present in the Yazidi city of Shangal, refusing to leave.
