The leader of the opposition party "Girchi – more freedom" Zurab Japaridze believes that Georgia, following Ukraine, should apply for NATO membership in an accelerated manner.

"Some time ago, President Zelensky said that Ukraine was submitting a special application to join NATO. The details are not fully known, but we are talking about accelerated accession to NATO with an appeal to the precedent of Finland and Sweden.

Both the territories of Ukraine and the territories of Georgia are occupied by Russia. Georgia was the first to face Russian aggression and the first to fight against Putin's horde. This is a historic window of opportunity for Georgia.

No matter what accelerated procedure is being discussed, we should demand the same procedure", writes Japaridze on his Facebook page.

Ukraine is not a member of NATO, although the desire for membership in the alliance is enshrined in the country's constitution. Georgia has exactly the same situation. Moreover, according to the latest opinion polls, almost 70% of the Georgian population supports the country's course towards joining the North Atlantic Alliance.

A few months before the invasion of Ukraine, Russia demanded that Kiev and Tbilisi abandon their intention to join the bloc.
