The United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI) expressed deep concern about the dangerous security developments in Iraq, which led to the death of people and many injuries in the Sinjar area.
Text of the UNAMI statement: "The United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI) is following with deep concern the serious security developments in northern Iraq, which, unfortunately, have led to the death and numerous injuries of the population of the city of Sinjar and nearby villages.
During military operations, including airstrikes, it is necessary to take the necessary precautions to protect and minimize damage to civilians who often suffer from the consequences of such attacks.
It is equally important to investigate such incidents promptly and comprehensively, establishing responsibility for the deaths and injuries of the Yazidi population.
Meanwhile, the local Yazidi population, which has been under siege for a long time, bears the brunt of this violence, as one conflict replaces another.
UNAMI calls on all relevant parties to put the interests of citizens first and to exercise restraint to avoid a dangerous escalation. Peace and stability are essential prerequisites for the recovery and return of internally displaced persons. Therefore, the Sinjar Agreement must be implemented without delay.
UNAMI continues to support the dialogue and urges all parties to respect the principles of State sovereignty and territorial integrity."
