The European Union expresses its readiness to mobilize 17 billion euros to restore the economic situation in the Eastern Partnership region — " EU Commissioner for Neighborhood and Enlargement Policy Oliver Varhei said at a press conference in Tbilisi.

According to this plan, Georgia will be able to attract at least 3.9 billion euros in investments. This is a third of the GDP that the country had before the coronavirus pandemic and the severe economic and budget crisis caused by it.

"A few days ago, in the European Union, we presented a very ambitious economic and investment plan for the entire Eastern Neighborhood. We are ready to mobilize 17 billion euros to restore the economic situation of this region.

2.3 billion euros will be provided in the form of grants, and the rest will be in the form of projects and investments that will be attracted from international financial institutions, the European Investment Bank and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development.

Our goal is to help neighboring countries improve their economic and social situation, and to help Georgia establish a stronger economic situation after the COVID-19 crisis.

We worked on this with the government of Georgia, with the previous government, with this government, to identify priorities, to identify the main problems existing in the country," Varhei said.

In this way, the European Union will give Georgia the opportunity to "jump through several stages and join us right at the stage at which the EU is now".

This is a meaningful big package of assistance, but it is also a huge task for all of us. This is an opportunity, and we will have to work together, we will have to work very hard to put all this into practice," the European Commissioner said.
