Iraq's Federal Council of Ministers has decided to close camps for displaced people next summer, prompting many questions and criticism, especially among displaced Yazidis. The decision comes with instructions, but many doubt its success and impact on families deprived of their homes because of the conflict in Sinjar. The difficulties of returning displaced persons are related to security, lack of resources and lack of conditions to return with dignity. The return process should be voluntary, supported by resources and provide security. It is important to take into account the views of displaced Yazidis themselves and to fight corruption in the implementation of return programmes."

The situation in Sinjar is one of the most difficult in the return of displaced persons. Of the more than 30,000 Yazidi families eligible for compensation, only about 12,000 have received it. While many residents of Sinjar have not received any compensation. The processing of compensation transactions has been delayed and the question of justice remains open. The closure of the camps does not appear to be a deliberate decision, given the destruction and lack of alternative accommodation. There is concern that this decision could lead to political tensions and new problems for displaced Yazidi families. Return should be accompanied by adequate support and housing for all those in need.

It is important that officials and government agencies in Iraq understand the complexity of returning refugees and IDPs. Imagine how they would feel if they themselves were without a home and the means to rebuild. It is the duty of the State to ensure fair compensation and restore the dignity of displaced persons. Camp closures must be prepared to provide services and support to those who return. It is important to acknowledge its mistakes and focus on the humanitarian aspect of the problem, avoiding politicisation."
