The ninth anniversary of Yazidi genocide is approaching, and this year there are both similarities and differences with previous years.

Similarities include ongoing displacement, migration, and the lack of return opportunities for many Yazidis. The Government of Iraq has also not fully recognized the genocide, and the slow uncovering of mass graves indicates a lack of efforts on the part of the Government of Iraq and its cooperation with the international ISIL crimes investigation team.

However, there are some differences this year. In the past, genocide commemorations were often sporadic and conducted by one or two sides. This year, many Yazidi organizations have joined together to work together in decision-making centers, in Sinjar, as well as in the diaspora as a whole.

This is a positive development, and it testifies to the cooperation and rapprochement of Yazidi community in working together to help the victims of Yazidi genocide speak out, those who are still waiting for a glimmer of hope.

A list of some of the joint events that will take place:

• August 1 - Joint event in Baghdad in the presence of government representatives, ambassadors and diplomats from other countries.

• August 2 - Event at the Roman Theater in the House of Coexistence in Sinuni.

• August 3 - Event in Sinjar district center.

• August 3 - Conference in Erbil with the participation of the Kurdistan Government and international and diplomatic missions in Iraq and Kurdistan.

• August 3 - An event in Baghdad in memory of the genocide of Yazidis and other components.

• August 3 - Demonstration and event in Germany, Hanover, dedicated to the genocide of Yazidis in Iraq.

• August 3 – Events in Russia, Armenia and Georgia dedicated to the genocide of Yazidi people in 2014.

These events allow the Yazidi community to come together and show the world that they will not forget what happened to their people. The events are also a way of demanding justice for the victims and their families.

Cultural Center of the Caucasus Yazidis hopes that this year the international community will take measures to help the Yazidis rebuild their lives and achieve justice.
