Shangal, Iraq-several hundred people gathered on the southern side of mount Sinjar on Saturday for a ceremony marking the start of the process of exhuming a Yazidi mass grave.
“In the Solag district, ISIS militants committed mass murder of Yazidi women and buried them in a mass grave. The remains of two such graves will be exhumed and then compared based on DNA analysis with the surviving family members, who will have the opportunity to bury their loved ones properly and in accordance with tradition,” the press release said.
The ceremony, which included Yazidi religious rites, was attended by about a hundred Yazidi men and women who lost someone to ISIS when the group swept through Northern Iraq in August 2014, carrying out ethnic cleansing against the Yazidi national minority.
