The sacred complex of Babylon on the list of World Heritage Sites

The sacred complex of Babylon is among 2019 nominees for UNESCO’s list of World Heritage Sites in this year, the city of Babylon is one of the oldest cities in Iraq and in the region.

The Republic of Azerbaijan has hosted the 43rd session of the World Heritage Committee. The Committee Session will take place in Baku, Azerbaijan from 30 June to 10 July, 2019.

The information document is hereby presented to give a general introduction to the participants of the 43rd session of the World Heritage Committee.

The 2019 nomination list of UNESCO Heritage list is separated into different categories -from natural properties such as Iceland’s Vatnajökull National Park to cultural sites such as Babylon in Iraq and mixed sites, which combine natural and cultural elements, such as Paraty in Brazil.

Concerning to this topic Iraqi President Barham Salih previously called on the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) to include the ancient city of Babylon on the World Heritage List, the Anadolu Agency reported.

A statement by the Iraqi presidency said Salih made the request during a meeting with UNESCO Director Audrey Azoulay in France. According to the statement, Barham discussed with Azoulay UNESCO’s  efforts in the fields of wiping out illiteracy and providing opportunities for workers in the scientific research field as well as educational developments and giving priority to researchers looking for scholarships.
