A new documentary by the Kurdish TV channel Rudaw sheds light on the difficulties faced by two of its former employees along with Yazidi refugees on mount Shangal during the invasion of the ISIL terrorist group in August 2014.

Former Rudaw reporter Barakat Issa and cameraman Faris Mishko sought refuge in the Shangal mountains when is militants stormed into the Yazidi district, killing and enslaving thousands of Iraqi Yazidis in a mass crime that many have recognized as genocide. The documentary "Seven days on the mountain" tells about the struggle for survival.

Hundreds of thousands of Yazidis took refuge on nearby mount Shangal, where they spent more than a week without food or water.

In the documentary, both Rudaw employees describe failed attempts to deliver aid to Yazidi refugees on mount Shangal.

"I saw a helicopter arrive and drop water from a very high altitude. The water bottles burst and we couldn't use them. One of the packages hit an old woman and she died on the spot."

Along with other Yazidis, Issa and Mishko managed to leave the mountain via a security corridor set up by the people's protection Units (YPG) and enter the Kurdistan region through North-Eastern Syria, known as Rojava.
