The Barzani Kurdish Charitable Foundation (BFB) has reopened its office in the Yazidi district of Shangal, about a year after it was closed by fighters of the Shangal self-defense Units (YBS), a Yazidi militia affiliated with the Kurdistan Workers  party (PKK).

Earlier in 2019, the BFB claimed that the YBS militia did not allow them to deliver humanitarian aid to Shangal, but the PKK-linked group denied these charges.

"Some time ago, Mahama Khalil, the mayor of the Shangal district who governs this area from Duhok, asked the Governor of Nineveh [province] on behalf of the people to influence any armed groups that prevent the BFB from delivering humanitarian aid," Diyan Jaafer, who heads the new office, told local media.

"On April 28, 2019, returning from another delivery of humanitarian aid to displaced people on mount Shangala, our path was cut by PKK fighters who took our phones and laptops, and then warned us not to return, accusing us of being associated with a certain political party... from then until last week, our organization did not provide any assistance to the area," Jaffer added.

The Kurdish charity organization previously delivered large humanitarian aid to civilians affected by the war with the terrorist organization Islamic state.
