The head of the organization of the Cultural Center of the Caucasus Yezidis , Yuri Smoyev, sent a letter regarding participation as an Amicus curiae to the Embassy of Iraq in Georgia, the letter noted:

As you know from the media, a resident of the long-suffering Sinjar district (Shangal), a Yazidi by nationality, Khalid Shammo Sarhan, was sentenced to death by the Nineveh provincial court.
Without in any way compromising the independence of the judiciary in Iraq, the Yazidi cultural Center of the Caucasus asks you to support and involve our organization Amicus curiae and help the judicial authorities of Iraq pay attention to the arguments of the defense of Khalid Shammo Sarhan about his innocence in the crime charged against him. We ask for the involvement of our international organization as an Amicus curiae, which can make it possible to preserve the life and authority of judicial impartiality.
Amicus curiae is a legal institution that is currently common in a number of countries, as well as in international courts. The term refers to a person who assists the court by bringing information relevant to the case to the court's attention, even though Amicus curiae is not a party to the case and is not involved in the case by its direct participants. The information that a "friend of the court" provides to the court can be of two types: factual and legal. In fact, the "friend of the court" is a party to the truth, but it is not legally considered as such.
The Yazidi community in the South Caucasus doubts the objectivity of the court verdict. Our appeal to You is dictated by the desire to prevent the Commission of another mistake, not to take the life of an innocent young man.
We ask you to convey the concern of the Yazidis of the Caucasus about the fate of Khalid Shammo Sarhan to the Federal authorities of the Republic of Iraq and our hope for the triumph of justice in his case.
