At the entrance to the Yazidi village of Nasiri, located to the east of the Baadri district, in the east of Dohuk province, northern Iraq, there is a monastery of Mar Odisho, it can be assumed that the village belongs to Christians, but this is not so, this is the history of the coexistence of Yazidis and Christians. So why is there a Christian monastery in a Yezidi village?
From the very beginning, Nasiri was inhabited only by representatives of the Christian religion, but over time, Yazidis began to settle in the village, and the two religions began to coexist with each other.
According to Shahwan Rafu, the history of this village dates back to the fourth century, according to the Christian Assyrian Book published in 1965. As for its name, it also goes back to the history associated with the Christian Mar Odisho, which means "victory".
Shahwan Rafu tells the story of coexistence: "We respect this place very much, and it is no less important than our Yazidi temples. The Yezidis of the village as a whole visit it constantly, and this is the strength of our village. People should live in love, friendship and peace, wherever they are. It doesn't matter what a person looks like or what they believe in."
Sheikh Darwish recalls life in Nasiri: "It was wonderful to live with Christians. I remember many situations, we shared dry bread with each other. Even in the burial of the dead, we respected each other's traditions and customs. It is a pleasure to preserve this monastery, which is the imprint of Christianity in this village. We have not seen any differences between the two religions. There has always been cooperation and understanding among the residents of this village, so we should all be proud of this friendship, which is one of the most important things in our village."
The Yezidis from the village of Nasiri take care of the Mar Odisho monastery, which belongs to the Christians of Iraq, and visit it at every religious event.
