Traditions are harmful - in Armenia they want to raise the age of marriage
MP Rustam Bakoyan said that such a need arose in view of the continuing practice of early marriages among members of the Yazidi community.
The Armenian Parliament held public hearings to discuss raising the permissible age for marriage. The co-author of the proposed changes, MP Rustam Bakoyan, stated that such a need arose in view of the continuing practice of early marriages among national minorities, particularly the Yazidi community.
"Raising the age limit for marriage is important to overcome the challenges facing the Yazidi community. There are traditions that harm us and form complexes," he noted.
Bakoyan added that he receives many calls from members of the Yazidi community about early marriages and bride kidnappings. He considered this practice unacceptable. In her turn, Armenian Ombudsman Anahit Avanesyan noted that early marriages, especially in the Yazidi community, make up a large percentage, due to which a number of children's rights are infringed. She believes that there is a need to implement concrete actions to solve the problem.
"The problem is systemic, therefore, the solutions should be complex. But it is necessary to apply a gentle methodology," the ombudsman said.
In her turn, Deputy Education Minister Araxia Svachyan informed that 1319 Yazidi girls are currently studying in Armenian schools. According to her data, 171 of them stopped attending school in 2023.
"Mostly girls leave school in grades 10-12. Thus, 52.7 per cent of Yazidi girls leave school after grade 9, 65.5 per cent after grade 10 and 88.2 per cent after grade 11," the minister said.
It should be noted that the age of marriage in Armenia, according to the current legislation, is 18 years. A person can also marry at the age of 17, if he/she has the consent of his/her parents, adoptive parents or guardian.
