The President of Iraq has appointed Adnan al-Zurfi as the country's new Prime Minister

Iraqi President Barham Saleh appointed Adnan al-Zurfi as the country's Prime Minister on Tuesday and charged him with forming a government. This was reported by the state television of Iraq, reports TASS. He is given 30 days to select candidates for Ministerial posts. On March 16, the constitutional deadline for the President to appoint a new Prime Minister expired.
Adnan al-Zurfi is 54 years old. PhD in law. Before his appointment, he was a member of the country's Parliament and led the Nasr coalition. In the 1980s, he was a member of the Islamic appeal party (Ad-da'awa), in 1988, under Saddam Hussein, he was sentenced to life in prison, but in 1991, he escaped from Abu Ghraib prison. He participated in the popular uprising in his hometown of Najaf in 1991. Then he went into hiding-first in Saudi Arabia, then moved to the United States. He returned to Iraq in 2004, after the overthrow of Saddam Hussein, and organized the political movement "al-Wafa". He was a member of the national reconstruction Authority and was Governor of Najaf province in 2004-2005. In the following years, he worked in the structure of the Ministry of internal Affairs, was an assistant to the Minister for intelligence. In 2009-2015, he was the head of al-Najaf.
Al-Zurfi describes himself as a Patriotic Democrat who believes in the independence of Iraq from any foreign forces and stands for a United Iraq without religious and national differences, for a civil society and a strong national economy.

Note that Yazidis in Iraq since 2014 have already seen the fifth Prime Minister of the country.
