Georgia is working to introduce rapid tests to detect coronavirus infection in the country, Deputy health Minister Tamar Gabunia told reporters.

According to her, Georgia is waiting for certain recommendations from those countries that have used this method.

"In this regard, the experience of South Korea is very interesting. As soon as we understand what place rapid tests can take in controlling our epidemic, the Protocol will be changed accordingly," Gabunia said.

She explained that often the high temperature in the subjects is the result of the flu or other viruses already known to specialists. It is in these cases that rapid tests for coronavirus will be effective and avoid unnecessary hospitalization.

Health Minister Ekaterina Tikaradze also confirmed that by the end of this week, Georgia will be able to "conduct aggressive testing among the population". She said this in an interview with Public television.

"We have received a recommendation from the world health organization" to conduct aggressive testing of the population. Accordingly, since last week, negotiations have already begun with those countries that have the best experience in this area. Today, this country is China. Now we just need to solve the issue of transportation and at the end of the week we will have the opportunity to start aggressive testing of the population, " Tikaradze said.

An outbreak of SARS caused by a new coronavirus occurred in the Chinese province of Hubei in late 2019. Since then, the pathogen has spread to more than 160 countries. Experts gave it the name COVID-19.

In March, the world health organization recognized that the disease had become a pandemic. More than 194,000 cases of coronavirus infection have been detected worldwide, more than 7800 people have died, and more than 81000 patients have recovered.

While the absolute majority of infections and deaths occur in China, it is followed by Italy and Iran.
