The situation in terms of gas security in the homes and apartments of Georgian residents remains alarming. This was stated by energy Ombudsman Salome Vardiashvili, presenting to the public a report on the work done by the apparatus for the year.

Violation of safety standards and rules of operation of gas equipment has repeatedly led to the death of people in Tbilisi.

In mid-January, four people were killed in a gas explosion in a multi-storey building in the capital's Didi Digomi district. On January 31, seven people were killed by carbon monoxide in an apartment in the Isani district. Already in October this year, an explosion of a makeshift water heater in a high-rise building near the metro station "Grmagele" killed one and injured three people.

According to official statistics, 86 people died in Tbilisi in 2016-2018 due to domestic gas leaks, and another 285 were poisoned. According to the energy Ombudsman, most accidents occur in the areas of Isani-Samgori, Gldani-Nadzaladevi and Didube-Chugureti.

In the near future, absolutely all subscribers will be obliged to install gas leak detectors in their homes. It is also planned to create an independent monitoring body. Moreover, at least once a year, all consumers will have to contact a licensed company, whose employees will check the security of the networks. Innovations are provided for in the draft law, which has already been developed by the Ministry of economy and sustainable development of Georgia.

Thanks to the help of the energy Ombudsman, hundreds of subscribers were able to prove that the gas distribution company made a mistake in calculating payments.

"We try to convey to everyone that we need to contact in the event that your receipt issued the amount of payment is in doubt. You should be interested and not pay blindly. If you contact the energy Ombudsman, you are insured against suspension of service. We will solve your problem in such a way that the service will not be interrupted, " Vardiashvili said.
