Almost 80% of displaced Yazidis cannot return home

The mayor of Sinjar, Mahma Khalil, said on Tuesday, November 19, that nearly 80% of the Yazidi displaced persons (IDPs) have not yet returned to their homes due to instability in the region.

Khalil, who is also the yazidi representative in the Iraqi Kurdistan Parliament, told reporters that the situation in Sinjar is unstable and criticized the Iraqi government for failing to help the Yazidis return to their hometowns.

According to the official, more than 363,000 yazidis still live in camps for internally displaced persons, and about 450,000 have moved abroad.

The mayor of Sinjar also noted that The Sinjar authorities called for the withdrawal of "illegitimate" forces from the yazidi district, and the Iraqi government, together with the Kurdistan Regional government (KRG), to take control of Sinjar.
