Dahuk: Yazidi religious shrine and an old cemetery appeared above the surface of Mosul Dam Lake

This week, a local official in the province of Dahuk reported that a religious shrine of Yazidis and dozens of ancient graves appeared above the surface of Mosul Dam Lake.

Hamza Eido told the Shafaq news agency that after the water level in Mosul Dam Lake dropped significantly, Yazidi village Khanak, located south of Dahuk province, began to be seen, namely, the shrine of Sheikh Bayezid, which was a religious shrine of Yazidis, appeared from under the flooded water, and next to it is a cemetery with dozens of ancient graves.

As locals say, the history of this cemetery dates back to more than 200 years ago, the villagers buried their dead in the courtyard of this temple. The temple functioned until 1985, but after the dam administration accumulated water, the Iraqi government evicted the villagers, after which the water flooded most of the area and religious shrines and cemeteries remained under water.
