The President of Iraqi Kurdistan, Nechirvan Barzani, met with the spiritual leader of the Yazidis of Iraq, Hazim Tahsin Beg, to discuss the urgency of implementing the Sinjar Agreement in order to demilitarize the Yazidi region in Nineveh province.

"The sides stressed the importance of continuing support for Yazidis, the importance of implementing the agreement between the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) and the Federal Government of Iraq on the status of Sinjar, facilitating the return of displaced persons to their native areas and rallying international support for the reconstruction of the Sinjar area", the statement released by the president's office said.

Nechirvan Barzani confirmed his support for Yazidis and their rights in Iraq and Kurdistan, assuring that the process of rescuing abducted terrorists and revealing the fate of the missing Yazidis will continue.

Numerous armed militia groups continue to operate in the Sinjar area, exacerbating insecurity and preventing the return of people who were internally displaced after the capture of Sinjar in 2014 by the ISIL group.

In 2020, the KRG and the Iraqi Federal Government signed the Sinjar Agreement to clear Sinjar of banned military groups and restore law and order. The agreement was brokered by the UN with the aim of restoring normal life in Sinjar, as well as the return of almost 320,000 internally displaced Yazidis who are currently living in camps in Kurdistan.

The agreement has not yet been implemented. Baghdad and the KRG are still unable to solve the security and political challenges that Sinjar continues to face.
