The EU reiterates its call on the Georgian authorities to promote the independence, accountability and quality of the judicial system, including the Supreme Council of Justice, through a broad, inclusive and party-coordinated reform process.
Recent appointments contradict the commitments on ambitious judicial reform undertaken by the leaders of Georgia in the framework of the political agreement of April 19 this year and confirmed on July 28. This included the elimination of shortcomings existing in the process of nominating candidates prior to the appointment of Supreme Court judges. These actions risk further undermining the independence of the court and public confidence in the Georgian justice system.
The EU once again notes that, despite its readiness to fully support the implementation in Georgia of the reforms provided for in the EU-Georgia Association Agreement, the EU's assistance to Georgia will depend on the progress made in the process of key reforms, including judicial reform," the statement reads.
