To date, 16 infection chains have been recorded in Georgia, and all of them are associated with mass events.

The Center for Disease Control and Public Health will consult with the Patriarchate of Georgia about the restrictions during the Easter celebration, the head of the Center, Amiran Gamkrelidze, told reporters.

Easter is one of the most widely celebrated holidays in Georgia. In 2020, to prevent the spread of the coronavirus, the authorities allowed Easter services, but closed access to cemeteries to prevent mass gatherings.

"The CDC has its own recommendations. Of course, we will have a meeting and consultations with the Patriarchate of Georgia in order, as last year, to make a joint decision so that the holiday is held as required by the population, and all anti-epidemic measures are observed, so as not to give an incentive to the spread of the epidemic," Gamkrelidze said.

He expressed hope that an agreement will be reached and all security measures will be observed.

At the same time, the chief epidemiologist noted that large crowds of people are the main threat to the spread of the virus. According to him, to date, 16 chains of infection have been recorded in Georgia and all of them are associated with mass events.

Easter in Georgia, as in the entire Orthodox world, is celebrated on May 2. The next day in Georgia, the population goes to the cemeteries on the Day of Remembrance of the Dead.

To limit the mobility of citizens, the Georgian authorities have already announced additional days off, and the Easter holidays in Georgia will last from April 30 to May 13.
