The first batch of the coronavirus vaccine from Pfaizer-BioNTech has been delivered to Georgia.

29,250 doses of the vaccine were brought to the Tbilisi airport from the United States by plane tonight.

The drug will be sent to the National Center for Disease Control and Public Health, and then distributed to four locations in Tbilisi, as well as in Batumi and Kutaisi.

The Pfaizer vaccine must be stored in special refrigeration units at a temperature of minus 80 degrees. Such infrastructure is available in six clinics where vaccination will take place. Earlier, the country received special syringes for this drug.

The Pfaizer vaccine will be available both for doctors who have been vaccinated since March 15, and for citizens over 65 years of age.

Georgia expected to receive the Pfizer vaccine in February, but it was not possible to reach an agreement due to delays in signing contracts with the manufacturer. As a result, Georgia was helped by the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF), which distributes the vaccine.

The vaccine developed by the German company BioNTech and the American pharmaceutical concern Pfizer is the first approved in December 2020 for use in the EU and the first officially approved by the World Health Organization. According to official data, the Pfizer vaccine gives 95% effectiveness and retains resistance to the coronavirus for up to six months.

Georgia received the first batch of coronavirus vaccine on March 13 – it was 43.2 thousand doses of the British-Swedish drug AstraZeneca. The next batch of AstraZeneca – 86.4 thousand doses, will arrive in April. UNICEF is helping Georgia to obtain medicines.

According to the Ministry of Health, Georgia is negotiating with all partner countries, including Israel, to receive Moderna and Pfizer vaccines to get a coronavirus vaccine. Negotiations are also underway with Germany, but it will be possible to get a vaccine from this country only in the third quarter of the year. Negotiations are also underway with India, Korea, Moderna and Johnson & Johnson. Georgia also does not exclude the import of Chinese vaccine.
