Over the past twelve days, rallies and demonstrations have continued outside the office of the local Yazidi security forces in Shangal to protest the agreement that provides for the dissolution of the Autonomous Administration's institutions.

The Iraqi Interior Minister arrived in the region to monitor and resolve the situation with the self-proclaimed Autonomous Administration of Shangal and to protest the agreement reached in Baghdad between the Iraqi government and the ruling party of Southern Kurdistan – the Kurdistan Democratic Party. The protest site is visited by local residents, and new groups continue to take part in the action. Today, a group from Khanasor arrived to continue the demonstrations.

Meanwhile, in Shangal with his delegation arrived the Minister of internal Affairs of Iraq Othman al-Ghanmi. The delegation is expected to attend the protest.

the people demand recognition of the legitimacy of the autonomous administration of Shangal, including the yazidi security forces. No concessions have yet been made at the level of the Iraqi Government.

Yazidis do not want to entrust their protection to external forces

On October 9, the ruling party of Southern Kurdistan, the KDP, and the central government of Iraq agreed to take control of the area of Shangal and disband all self-defence forces. In 2014, only the partisans of the Kurdistan People's Self-Defense Forces, and later the People's Self-Defense Units and Women's Self-Defense Units from Rojava defended Shangal from ISIL (a terrorist organization banned in the territory of the Russian Federation) and helped create their own resistance forces and democratic self-government in the region. In 2018, the NSS withdrew from the region after completing this task. Since then, Shangal has defended itself on its own, and the population is no longer willing to entrust its security and governance to external forces, remembering the seventy-four mass killings of Yazidis in their history.
