The Charter of journalistic ethics of Georgia has published an interim report on online media coverage of the pre-election period.

The organization's researchers started monitoring on June 15, and plan to complete it in December 2020. As part of the study, they plan to study the materials of the following media: ambebi.ge, ipn.ge, Kvira.ge, Mpn.ge, Netgazeti.ge, News.on.ge, primetime.ge, Publika.ge, radiotavisupleba.ge, Reginfo.ge, sknews.ge, sputnik-georgia.com, Tabula.ge.

Main arguments

The main challenge for online media remains the improper separation of editorial and commercial materials. Part of the media does not accompany commercial materials with a corresponding warning. Part of it does so not in accordance with accepted standards.

Another challenge is the lack of critical and in — depth analysis of the event;

Four of the thirteen media outlets tried to present the government's actions positively and discredit opposition politicians;

There were cases when the media covered facts and serious accusations one-sidedly;

Another problem is the frequent flouting of rules for reporting sexist statements — without editorial comment or other assessment;

The materials studied almost did not contain hate speech or discriminatory terminology, however, there were cases when some of the media published such statements without changes.
