The Georgian Parliament will consider in the final reading the new rules for citizens of the country who want to travel to the Schengen area, according to the Parliament's website. Since March 2017, Georgian citizens have been granted the right to visa-free short-term trips to the countries of the Schengen area (90 days within 180 days) for tourism, business and guest visits.

According to the new rules, a Georgian citizen may not be released from the country if he / she does not have a biometric passport issued within 10 years and valid for at least three months by the time the Georgian citizen returns to his / her homeland.

A Georgian citizen may also be refused if they do not have a return ticket or a reservation for this ticket, or if they do not have a hotel reservation, other documents and the exact address of the receiving person living in the Schengen area.

At the same time, the package of amendments also includes the introduction of criminal liability for organizing the issuance of forged certificates or documents for money to Georgian citizens in order to obtain asylum in a foreign country.

So such an action will be punishable by imprisonment for a term of two to six years, and in the presence of aggravating circumstances-from 3 to 8 years. The reason for taking such tough measures was the increase in the number of asylum seekers from Georgia to the EU. Germany, France, Sweden, and Iceland expressed concern about this, and called on the Georgian authorities to take appropriate measures.

The law will come into force after it is adopted in the third reading, signed by the President and published on the website of the legislative Bulletin.
