According to the Georgian authorities, inclusion in the list guarantees an increase in the flow of tourists to cultural heritage sites, as well as additional protection measures and funding

The cultural landscape of Vardzia-Khertvisi-Oloda (Samtskhe-Javakheti region) can be included in the list of candidates for UNESCO world heritage sites, the National Agency for the protection of cultural heritage monuments of Georgia said in a Facebook post.

As noted in the Department, getting into the list guarantees an increase in the flow of tourists to cultural heritage sites, as well as additional protection measures and funding.

Nominees are divided into categories: natural, cultural and mixed objects.

Georgia has already submitted the Vardzia-Khertvisi cultural landscape for inclusion in the world heritage list in 1999. Then UNESCO sent recommendations to Georgia to strengthen the levers of management of the object.

It is reported that over the past five years, thanks to funding from government agencies, charitable foundations and international institutions, the site has been carried out conservation work and various measures to improve the infrastructure. As a result, Georgia again decided to nominate the object again.
