"Sorry, I'm impeached" - Zourabichvili canceled visit to Belgium
Georgian President Salome Zourabichvili has sent a letter to King Philip of Belgium refusing to participate in the opening ceremony of the Europalia-Georgia festival.
She writes that she is prevented from arriving in Brussels by the government's "unjustified refusal" for her participation in the event, as well as by the impeachment submission scheduled to be heard at the Constitutional Court on October 3 and 4.
"Your Majesty, please believe me that I had a sincere desire to represent Georgia at the highest level in the process of opening a new important page in the relations between our two countries, as we agreed during our meeting...," the letter reads.
The Constitutional Court of Georgia said earlier that it will consider the constitutionality of President Salome Zourabichvili's actions on October 3. Oral hearings will be held with the participation of the authors of the lawsuit and President Salome Zourabichvili.
The ruling Georgian Dream party has launched impeachment proceedings, claiming that the President has grossly violated the Constitution with her series of visits to foreign countries without the government's consent.
Zourabichvili says she has been making the visits with her personal money, campaigning for politicians to give Georgia EU candidate status.
If the Constitutional Court confirms the violation, the impeachment issue will be referred to parliament for a vote. In order for the impeachment to be passed, 100 votes are needed, the ruling party of Georgia lacks them and there are discussions whether it will be able to lure some of the opposition MPs.
